Getting started

Up and running in three steps.

  1. Install

    A signed Windows installer. No account to create.

  2. Pick how it listens

    Download the free on-device model (about 570 MB, and Froge asks first), or paste a key from a provider. If you choose a key, Froge shows you where to get one.

  3. Hold Ctrl + Win and talk

    Let go, and the words are typed where your cursor is.

Free on-device models

Speech is recognized on your PC, and nothing leaves it to transcribe. Start with the standard model, then add a faster one or a more accurate one if you like.

Where your audio goes
Nowhere. Froge is built to keep it on your PC, and never saves it to disk.
Internet needed
Only for the one-time model download, which Froge asks you about first: about 570 MB. The faster model adds about 670 MB, the more accurate one about 1.6 GB.
Who charges
No one. The models are free to use.

Connect an account you own with Deepgram, Groq, OpenAI, AssemblyAI, ElevenLabs or eight others, and Froge talks to it directly. Several give new accounts free credit: Deepgram’s is $200, no card needed.* On Groq, an hour of dictation is listed at about 4 cents.*

Your key stays yours.

Your key is stored on your PC, sealed to your Windows account. Hosted recognition stays off until you switch it on, and if your provider can’t be reached, Froge falls back to your on-device model.

* As each provider’s own pricing page stated it on 18 September 2026. Providers change their offers, so check before you rely on one.

  • Where it shouldn’t type, it hands you the text

    Windows running as administrator, and password boxes that Windows marks as such, get a small window with your words ready to copy. Nothing you said is lost.

  • Terminals and coding agents, when you ask

    Switch it on in Settings and a line of dictation goes into a terminal or an agent’s prompt, exactly as heard. Froge never presses Enter for you.

A small tool that stays out of the way.

  • Snippets

    Say the phrase, get the text: your email address, a link, the opening line you type every day.

  • Hold a hotkey to talk

    Hold Ctrl + Win, speak, let go. For longer thoughts, press Ctrl + Win + Space to go hands-free. You can change both in Settings.

  • Spoken formatting and corrections

    Froge punctuates as you talk. Say “new line” for a break, or “comma” when you want to be exact. Say “at 5, actually 6 pm” and Froge types “at 6 pm”.

  • A personal dictionary

    Add the names, product terms and jargon you use, and fix the ones the recognizer keeps getting wrong.

  • Your language, your microphone

    Pick from 46 languages in Settings, with your Windows language listed first, or let Froge detect it. Choose which microphone to use from the ones on your PC.

  • Speed or accuracy, on your PC

    Add a faster on-device model, or a more accurate one. Froge asks before it downloads either.

  • Optional cleanup of ums and punctuation

    Off until you switch it on: a small model on your PC, or your own Groq, OpenAI or OpenRouter key, tidies filler words and punctuation. It may not add, reorder or change your words. With a hosted one, only the text is sent, never the audio.

Private by design

There’s no server of ours to trust.

Your audio never reaches us: there’s nowhere for it to go. Froge is an app on your PC, not a service, and we never receive your audio, your text or your keys.

These points describe how Froge is built. In one test with Deepgram, every connection we sampled went to Deepgram. A complete network check, including the on-device path, is still to come. Once text is in another app, that app’s rules apply, and a hosted provider’s own terms apply to what you send it.

  • No account

    Nothing to sign up for and nothing to sign in to.

  • No telemetry

    Froge has no usage reporting, and doesn’t send what you say anywhere you haven’t chosen. Crash details stay in a local file on your PC, and never include your words.

  • History off by default

    Froge keeps no record of what you said unless you turn history on. Turn it off again and it stops with your next sentence.

  • Keys sealed to your Windows account

    Your API key is encrypted with Windows’ own data protection. A copied key file won’t open for anyone else.

  • Hosted recognition and cleanup are off until you turn them on

    Adding a key doesn’t switch either on, and each asks you first. Turning one off takes effect on your next sentence.

What you’re not paying for

Subscription dictation, without the subscription.

Most dictation tools are services: an account, a monthly fee, and a server that hears everything. Froge is a program you buy once and run yourself.

Questions

Do I need an API key?

No. Froge can recognize speech entirely on your PC with a free on-device model, downloaded once from inside the app. A key is only needed for a hosted provider.

Does my voice go to you?

No. There’s no Froge server. On your computer, audio stays on your PC. With a provider, it goes from your PC to the provider you chose.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once the on-device model is downloaded. On-device recognition doesn’t need an internet connection.

Which languages?

Whisper small recognizes many languages, and Settings lists 46 of them. Parakeet v3 covers 25 European languages; for any other language, Froge uses Whisper. So far we’ve tested Froge mostly in English.

Does it rewrite what I say?

No. Froge types what you said, with the punctuation, line breaks and corrections you asked for out loud. If you turn on optional cleanup, on your PC or with your own Groq, OpenAI or OpenRouter key, a model tidies punctuation and removes filler sounds like “um”. It may not add, reorder or change your words; an answer that tries is thrown away and your words are typed as you said them.

Which apps and fields does it type into?

Ordinary text fields in ordinary windows: email, chat, documents, browsers, AI tools. Three places get a copy-only preview instead of typing: terminals, windows running as administrator, and password fields that Windows reports as such (most browser and app password boxes do). A password field that doesn’t report itself, or answers too slowly, is typed into like any other field, so don’t dictate a password. That check happens as the text is inserted, after recognition, so with a hosted provider switched on the words have already gone to that provider. Games and anti-cheat software are unsupported.

How is Froge different from Windows voice typing?

Windows voice typing is built in and free, and if it does what you need, keep using it. Froge adds a hotkey you hold in any app, an on-device model you download once and keep, spoken corrections like “actually” and “scratch that”, a dictionary for your names and terms, and the option of your own provider key when you want hosted accuracy.
